SALARY RANGE — Public safety officers earn between $3,321 - $4,152/month, depending upon experience.
RETIREMENT —The City of Orem participates in the Utah Retirement system. Public safety officers may retire after 20 years of service.
LIVING WITHING THE CITY LIMITS — The City of Orem does NOT require public safety officers to live within the city limits.
BIKE PATROL — Selected officers work bicycle patrol when needed. They patrol high crime areas, City parks, retail shopping centers, and special events.
ALCOHOL ENFORCEMENT OFFICER — One officer is assigned as the Alcohol Enforcement officer. His primary responsibility is to look for, respond to, and assist other officers in alcohol offenses and related problems. His vehicle is equipped with specialized equipment for alcohol enforcement.
CAR PER OFFICER — The Orem DPS utilizes a car per officer program for officers assigned to police services. Officers are responsible to keep the assigned vehicle clean, in good working order, and fueled. Vehicle repairs are made at the city shops. Officers are encouraged to use their assigned vehicle when not working and running errands or traveling within the city. Marked patrol vehicles are equipped with radar units and laptop computers. Some vehicles are also equipped with in-car video recording cameras.
CALLS FOR SERVICE — The Orem DPS responded to 60,187 calls for service during 2008, or approximately 164 calls per day.
CRIMES PER 1000 — The crime rate for the City Of Orem is 27.9 Part One crimes per 1,000 citizens. Part One crimes are classified by the FBI as burglary, robbery, aggravated assault, murder, auto theft, rape, and theft.
NEW RADIO SYSTEM ( 800 MHZ ) The Orem Department of Public Safety has installed an 800 MHZ radio system. The new system has improved communications capabilities throughout the Department and allows officers to interact and coordinate activities with agencies Statewide.
